Oil-free air applications

Many industrial companies require consistently high-quality compressed air, especially with regard to oil content. For some sensitive applications, it is absolutely essential to have an efficient supply of 100% oil-free compressed air that complies with class 0 as defined by ISO 8573-1.

High-Performance Airends

SCR-G series compressors are equipped with airends of the highest possible quality to produce completely oil-free compressed air with the lowest operating costs and for the longest possible service life. The excellent properties of the airends in SCR-G compressors are primarily based on advanced materials and technologies.

1 Rotor material – the first-stage rotors are made of high-quality carbon steel, and the second-stage rotors are stainless steel; the high material quality prevents corrosion and reduces premature wear of the rotor coating.
2 Rotor and housing material – the rotors and the inner wall of the airend housing are coated with a special MoS2-based layer.
3 Double sealing – the rotor chamber is securely separated from the gearbox by labyrinth and hermetic seals made of stainless steel to completely prevent the ingress of gearbox oil.
4 Shaft bearings – to eliminate the risk of contact and reduce stress, the shafts are mounted in SKF radial and axial bearings and in gear wheels.

Unique Technology

Thanks to the combination of high-quality rotor materials, their precise mounting, and a molybdenum disulfide-based coating, a unique solution is created that extends operating life and significantly reduces energy costs and the frequency of expensive overhauls involving complete airend replacements.

SCR9000

Completely Oil-Free Air

The airends used in the SCR-G compressor series operate on the principle of two-stage compression. The intake air enters the first stage, where it is compressed to approximately 2 bar. It is then directed to the intercooler, where it is cooled and delivered to the second stage for final compression to the required discharge pressure.

Compression is provided by two pairs of rotors connected to the gearbox, which are hermetically sealed to ensure the air is produced completely oil-free. The airend design in SCR-G compressors meets the requirements for oil-free air with a Class 0 certification according to ISO 8573-1.

Compressors with Variable Speed Control (SCR-GV)

Traditional fixed-speed compressors operate in work cycles where the compressor alternates between loaded operation, unloaded operation, or being completely stopped. Immediately after starting, air compression begins and the main motor runs under load. Once the required pressure is reached, the compressor switches to unloaded operation, where it no longer produces air but the motor continues to rotate the airend at idle, consuming energy.

Unloaded operation makes the next restart easier, but during these several seconds, unnecessary energy consumption occurs, typically amounting to tens of percent of the total energy used. The lower the air demand, the higher the proportion of unloaded operation, creating an opportunity for significant savings in the cost of compressed air and overall operating expenses associated with the compressor.

Vector-Controlled Frequency Converters

SCR-HPM compressors are equipped with advanced INOVANCE frequency converters that maintain the required output pressure and adjust the drive speed to the immediate demand for compressed air. Thanks to this modern control system, idle running is significantly reduced, resulting in energy savings of tens of percent. Further cost reductions can be easily achieved by quickly adjusting the output pressure and control pressure range.

The vector-controlled converters used have been developed specifically for screw compressor applications and provide very high torque at frequencies as low as 0.1 Hz. Standard frequency converters either cannot operate below 5 Hz or are extremely inefficient in this range.

The new generation of INOVANCE vector converters ensures very high energy efficiency across the entire speed range.

Efficient Cooling System

During air compression in the dry-running airend of SCR-G compressors, the absence of oil and the extremely high rotor speeds generate a large amount of heat, reaching almost 200 °C, which must be effectively removed from the system and the entire machine. SCR-G compressors are therefore equipped with oversized coolers and an efficient ventilation system.

1 Oil cooler – ensures the reduction of gearbox oil temperature.
2 Intercooler – reduces the air temperature after compression in the first stage; the cooled air from the intercooler is directed to the second stage.
3 Aftercooler – reduces the temperature of the air leaving the second compression stage; the air cooled by the aftercooler is directed to the compressor outlet.

For SCR-G/GV compressors with air cooling, highly efficient radial fans are used for cooling. An effective alternative is SCR-WG/WGV compressors with water cooling using water-to-air heat exchangers.
